The Uni of York is a finalist in the prestigious HEIST Awards 2024, recognising the collaborative Black Access student recruitment marketing campaign, developed in partnership with Net Natives.

Black Access is a multi-intervention, sustained widening-access initiative that supports Black students currently studying at sixth form or college as they consider their future ambitions.

The programme, co-created and delivered by a dedicated team of students alongside the University of York's Access and Outreach team, aims to address the unique challenges faced by Black students in their journey to higher education.

To raise awareness of the programme with prospective students and their parents and supporters, the Marketing Team created a multi-platform campaign featuring student-led content, which is in the running for the HEIST Awards this year.

“Being recognised as a finalist for this award shines a light on the innovation and commitment we apply to fostering a diverse and inclusive community here at York,” said Rebecca Clark, Head of Access and Outreach at the University.

“The Black Access programme is a true innovation, putting students, who are experts in their own experiences, at the very heart of what we’re trying to do. The marketing campaign is a testament to the power of partnership, working with students alongside sector experts, and the impact that open and honest campaigns can have.”

Student collaboration

Central to the success of the Black Access campaign were the contributions of the Black Access student interns: Amari, Kieayna and Thomas.

Playing a crucial role as consultants and content creators, the student team provided invaluable insights and guidance from the concept stage through to implementation. Their involvement ensured that the campaign's content was authentic, and resonated deeply with prospective Black students.

Being on this Black Access campaign has been so rewarding. I’ve felt inspired and welcomed in the community here in York – able to grow as a person, as someone who can communicate and lead better.

Amari, Black Access student team

As a university shaped by founding values of excellence, equality and opportunity for all, York puts widening participation at the heart of their strategy.

“Black Access, and the marketing campaign, is just one part of our commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse community,” said Rebecca Clark. “Student partnerships and collaboration are core principles that underpin all our Access and Participation work, and we look forward to building on this success and inspiring other institutions.”

Black Access has evolved beyond a programme to get Black students into higher education; it’s become an agent for change. The student team has used this platform to talk to University leaders, ensuring longevity of the movement from the top down, as well as the bottom up.
