Our work with current students
Working with current University of York students is at the heart of the work we do.
It's important that every student is able to see themselves represented within higher education. That's why here in the Access and Outreach team, we work with a range of current university students from different backgrounds and experiences to help inform and support our work.
The different roles we work with
Student Ambassador
Student Ambassadors can get involved in a number of ways. Opportunities usually involve attending school visits with us and supporting our online and in-person programme events throughout the year. Visits and events involve answering questions, sharing own experiences and working with visiting students whilst they are with us on campus.
Student Programme Assistant
Student Programme Assistants work consistently on a programme or project for an extended period of time, supporting the core team of staff in the delivery of the programme. Responsibilities include attendance at team meetings, content creation, activity development, admin tasks and delivery at events.
Student Planning Coordinators
Student Planning Coordinators on the Black Access programme steer the planning and delivery of the programme by sharing their thoughts and ideas through their own lived experiences. Other activities include content creation and leading online and live sessions with schools and community groups.
Student Supporter and Mentor
Student Supporters and Mentors work with post-16 programme students by answering their questions, sharing their own experiences and offering advice and guidance. They are matched with a student and support them throughout their year on the programme by helping them to design their own personalised programme.
Residential Assistant
Residential Assistants (RA's) are assigned a group of students to support and look after throughout their time on campus while attending a residential. They also have the opportunity to deliver a live sports and society session as part of the residential programme. Senior Residential Assistant roles support the core team in overseeing the coordination of all RA's and smooth delivery of the residential.
How to get involved
Students who work with us have the opportunity to develop skills like teamwork, creativity and communication. There are a broad range of opportunities available, so students can choose what best suits their skill set and interests, or select activities which will support skill development for a future career path. All work opportunities with us are paid, which also makes it a great part-time job whilst undertaking studies. We provide training for all roles and operate a strong safeguarding policy.
There are many more opportunities that come up throughout the year, and students can choose the ones they want to sign up for. All roles and opportunities are advertised to current University of York students through the Student Ambassador Scheme.
