News | Posted on Saturday 3 May 2014

Professor Timmis will be presenting a talk "How can an ant help a robot?" at a Pint of Science event on Wednesday 21st May at The Fulford Arms, York

A "Pint of Science" event is taking place at the Fulford Arms, 121 Fulford Rd, York, from Monday 19th - Wednesday 21st May, 2014.  Three talks will be given by academics at the University of York, including a talk by Prof. Jon Timmis, director of the robot lab, on Wednesday 21st.

How can an ant help a robot?

Robots are starting to get everywhere. From cleaning your house, to picking fruit or to searching nuclear disaster sites robots can work in groups, or swarms, towards a common goal. We will explore a variety of biological worlds, from the ant to the immune system, that give inspiration to robotic engineers to design and build robotic swarms that can cooperate in a decentralised way and start to self-repair. We will also explore the link between the physical body of a robot, its mind (or control system) and its ability to interact with the world.
