Shared Commitment to Public Involvement in Health and Social Care research

We are the first higher education institution (HEI) to join a partnership that fosters better collaboration between researchers and members of the public.

The partnership, spearheaded by the Health Research Authority (HRA), the National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) and a host of other organisations, pledges support to its Shared Commitment to Public Involvement.

We have backed the partnership as part of our commitment to ensuring research is relevant, impactful, and serves the public good.

The partnership, which features 32 members, empowers researchers through training and support to involve patients in their work, with the ultimate goal of improving the extent and quality of public involvement across the sector so that it is consistently excellent.

As part of the partnership, we have signed up to four commitments, which are to be realised and delivered by the Involvement@York team on behalf of the University:

  1. Share best practice and innovative approaches for public involvement, signposting the University research community to resources to support public involvement and collaboration with the public in research.
  2. Champion, enable and facilitate public involvement in research supporting public contributors and researchers to work together.
  3. Grow our research involvement expertise to support inclusive, ethical, compassionate and reciprocal involvement in research with communities and the public.
  4. Introduce, champion, advise and support non-traditional health research areas with their public involvement activity, i.e. technology and engineering, with a view to establishing standard practice in these fields.
