There are two options available to departments that wish to offer a PGR programme by practice.

References to the PhD in Creative Writing are for illustration only and do not relate to the PhD in English with Creative Writing offered at York.

Departments can either:

  • set up a separate, named PGR programme by practice, or

  • enable a PGR programme by practice by setting up a ‘by practice’ assessment option within an existing PGR programme.

Separate, named PGR programmes by practice

A separate, named PGR programme by practice (eg a PhD in Creative Writing, PhD in Film by Practice, PhD in History by Practice) must be approved by the department, faculty and by the PGR Policies and Programmes Committee (PPPC).

PPPC will need to understand the rationale for the programme, and approve its delivery and assessment (including full details of any alternative assessment format). The name of the programme should normally reflect the practice focus.

By practice assessment option within an existing PGR programme

A ‘by practice’ assessment option within an existing PGR programme must be approved by the department and PPPC.

PPPC will need to approve the assessment (including full details of any alternative assessment format) and be reassured about how individuals taking this option will be supported (eg given the lack of a cohort). Successful PGRs will receive the standard PGR award (ie it will not reflect the practice focus).
