Practical issues and how to resolve them
There is no ‘one size fits all’ model for journal-style theses.
For this reason the University requirements have been written to maximise flexibility, whilst ensuring that key considerations are met (eg around coherence of the thesis, and authorship and copyright considerations).
Schools, departments or centres may decide to limit this flexibility by setting out requirements and/or guidance around aspects of journal-style theses. Any such limitations should be for good reason, and will have been approved by the York Graduate Research School.
You should check with your department if they have set out any additional requirements for any of the sections below, as these must be followed. If a department issues guidance, you are recommended to follow this in consultation with your supervisor and TAP.
