News | Posted on Thursday 6 March 2025

Aimed at UK/home domiciled PGRs from racially-marginalised backgrounds, join the YCEDE mentoring programme.

YCEDE are delighted to invite you to participate in the Yorkshire Consortium for Equity in Doctoral Education’s (YCEDE) Circle Mentoring programme for PGRs! This session is an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in careers within life sciences.

Date: Monday 7th April 10:00-12:00 (online)

What is Circle Mentoring?

Circle Mentoring is an online, group PGR mentoring opportunity where you’ll engage with 2-3 mentors. In this session, our mentors will discuss their experiences of working in the field of life sciences.

Our mentors will share their career journeys, providing insights into their roles and answering your questions. The session includes group discussion and breakout rooms where you can engage with each mentor separately.

Meet the Mentors:

Dr Daniel Okeowo is a Lecturer in Pharmacy Practice at the School of Pharmacy, Newcastle University. He earned his Master’s degree in Pharmacy from the University of Durham and Newcastle University in 2018, completing a dissertation titled "Clinical Practice Guidelines for Older Patients with Multi-morbidities – What Are the Implications for Deprescribing." Following his pre-registration year at University College London Hospitals, Daniel became a registered pharmacist in August 2019. He went on to pursue a PhD at the University of Leeds, funded by the NIHR Yorkshire and Humber Patient Safety and Translation Research Centre, focusing on "How to Safely and Routinely Implement Deprescribing in Primary Care." Following this, Daniel took up a lectureship role at Newcastle University’s School of Pharmacy

Donald Palmer has a BSc in Medical Sciences from Bradford University, MSc in Immunology at KCL and a PhD from MRC, Clinical Sciences Centre. Donald worked in laboratories at Cancer Research and Imperial College London; in the latter he successfully obtained an MRC Career Development Award.  He joined the Royal Veterinary College, University of London in 2002 and is currently an Associate Professor of Immunology.

As part of our commitment to providing spaces that champion diversity, our mentors and facilitators for this session bring diverse lived experiences, including all being from racially marginalised backgrounds. We hope this session will provide a safe space for candid conversations about the experience of entering and navigating their careers, particularly for those whose career paths are shaped by their unique perspectives as individuals from racially marginalised communities.

Who can participate?

In order to align with YCEDE eligibility, this session is open to UK/home domiciled PGRs from racially-marginalised backgrounds at YCEDE partner universities (Bradford, Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam, York, and Leeds).

What is your role in the session?

Circle mentoring is different from a career panel talk or webinar, participants will be expected to ask our mentors questions and engage in discussion. This will be in a safe and supportive space with experienced professionals who want to support your career development!

What can you gain from taking part?

Circle Mentoring offers a chance to ask mentors about their career paths and gain advice on your career and professional development. You will have the opportunity to listen and learn from the mentors experience, and this may help you in making an informed choice about your next steps in your PGR journey.
