Could you summarise your research in just three minutes?
If that sounds like an exciting challenge & opportunity to develop your skills, then you should apply to the 2025 University of York 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) competition!
Originally developed by the University of Queensland, 3MT competitions are now held across the world. The aim is to present your research to a public, non-specialist audience, in just three minutes. You'll be up against the clock, so you'll need to condense your work as well as making it accessible to the general public - while only having one slide to help you present!
At York, 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) is part of the York Festival of Ideas, a programme of events for all ages and interests featuring world-class speakers, exhibitions, theatre, music, films, guided walks, family-friendly activities and more.
Why should I apply?
3MT is a fantastic opportunity to develop and practice your public engagement skills. You’ll receive bespoke guidance and training, be supported to think about your research from different perspectives, and get to take part in an exciting live event with a cohort of other PhD Researchers! Plus, you’ll be in with a chance of winning one of the following prizes:
- 1st place - iPad
- 2nd place - £150 voucher
- 3rd place - £75 voucher
- People's choice - £75 voucher
The York winner will then go on to the UK final, to compete against the winners from other Universities around the UK.
But don’t just take our word for it - hear from some of our previous finalists about their 3MT experience and why you should apply for this year's competition!
Who can apply?
Current PhD Researchers at the University of York, who have passed their first Progression Meeting, but not yet completed their Viva.
