Early career fellowship support at York
The University of York is one of the UK’s top research-intensive universities, and we pride ourselves on supporting researchers throughout their time here.
We can support you from the moment you begin thinking about applying, right through to the end of your fellowship.
Support from departments, schools and faculties
The best place to start is by contacting the department or school you would like to host you during your fellowship as they may be able to provide you with tailored support for fellowship applicants.
This support can include help with:
- Identifying a suitable fellowship opportunity
- Providing you with personalised timescales
- Developing your proposal
- Carrying out internal peer review prior to submission.
Support from the York Fellowship Programme
The University of York is home to the York Fellowship Programme, which supports talented early career researchers. We provide support to prospective fellows and, once you join us as a fellowship holder, the programme will support your ongoing development, allowing your research career to flourish.
Key aspects of the York Fellowship Programme include:
- Development and support for outstanding prospective candidates to help you to succeed in gaining your fellowship
- Ongoing training, development and networking opportunities throughout your fellowship
- The opportunity to apply for a funded extension to your fellowship to work on your research ideas, develop entrepreneurial, policy-related, or civic engagement activities, or to engage with new audiences, user communities, or international connections.

What's included in the York Fellowship Programme?
The York Fellowship Community
York is home to the York Fellowship Community, a group of over 100 early career researchers from across the University who hold research fellowships. The community meets regularly to socialise, network, and share their experiences and expertise. Our fellows work on a range of exciting, world-leading research projects, spanning the Faculties of Sciences, Social Sciences, and Arts and Humanities.
Fellowship Fortnight
Our flagship event is Fellowship Fortnight, which runs once a year to celebrate the work enabled through our community of fellows. Fellowship Fortnight showcases the work of current fellows, provides training for prospective fellowship applicants and brings together academic staff to share ideas and practice to support fellows.
The Preparing for Fellowship Success (PfFS) Programme
Every May, the University runs the Preparing for Fellowship Success programme, aimed at internal and external high calibre postdocs and early career researchers who intend to submit a fellowship application within 9-12 months. It provides the space, time and support for exceptional early career researchers to develop their fellowship application.
Each aspect of the fellowship process is covered and candidates are fully supported by professional support staff, existing fellowship holders, external speakers and fellowship mentors. The retreat is provided free of charge and is part of the University’s commitment to providing support for postdocs/research staff with the skills and capabilities to develop independent research.
The Programme is aligned to the institutional commitment to the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers.
