US Ambassador (retired) Carey Cavanaugh is Professor of Diplomacy and Conflict Resolution at the University of Kentucky. This followed a diplomatic career centered on peace and humanitarian issues, in addition to assignments in the State Department, Pentagon and Senate, he served in Berlin, Moscow, Tbilisi, Rome and Bern.
As an American diplomat, Carey helped advance peace efforts involving Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cyprus, Georgia, Greece, Moldova, Tajikistan, and Turkey. In 1992, he established the American Embassy to the new Republic of Georgia, later becoming US Special Negotiator for Eurasian Conflicts and Co-Chair of the OSCE Minsk Group process for Nagorno-Karabakh. The South Caucasus remains a personal focus. Carey writes frequently about developments there and has been active in civil society initiatives and track two diplomatic efforts in the region.
Carey holds degrees from the University of Florida and Notre Dame. On sabbatical in 2016, he was executive-in-residence at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy and visiting fellow at Clare College, Cambridge. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a trustee of the peace building international NGO Conciliation Resources (London)
