Regional inequalities and attitudes towards trade in the UK

Researchers: Dr Dan Keith and Professor Sofia Vasilopoulou

With Brexit, the UK government aims to independently set up its own Free Trade Agreements (FTAs). This project will collect quantitative data on public attitudes to FTAs in order to understand the effect of inequalities and Brexit polarization on public opinion on trade. The project’s findings have implications for trade policy, allowing for the effective engagement with stakeholders interested in how differing views on trade can be represented in the policy-making process. Studying the democratic foundations of an independent UK trade policy is important at a time when UK policy-makers are confronted with the task of brokering new trade deals with potentially diffuse benefits and concentrated costs in an uncertain political and economic context.
