I had a long conversation with two gentlemen who live in Ramabai Nagar. One of them is an employee of a public sector undertaking and very interested in the welfare of other members of the neighbourhood. He told me about a community organisation he has founded in the neighbourhood named after the pioneering nineteenth-century social reformers Savitribai and Jyotirao Phule. His vision for the organisation is that it would inculcate a scientific temper among young people in the community, towards which they celebrate birth anniversaries of scientists from all over the world. He has also been organising small “Constitution Rallies” in the community to make the children and young people of the neighbourhood aware of the provisions related to equality and social justice in it. The rally is convened on November 26 every year (the date on which the Indian Constitution was adopted in 1949) and approximately 400 children participate in it.
