Between Support and Resistance: Civil Society's Response to Populist Advances in Latin America
Populism has been a recurring phenomenon in Latin American politics since the 1930s. Most studies on populism have focused on the conceptualization, measurement, and institutional consequences of populism, but little is still known about the specific role of civil society in the emergence, support, and opposition to populists leaders. With the growth of conservative movements and the far-right in Latin America, leading to the elections of right-wing populist leaders such as Bolsonaro in Brazil and Milei in Argentina, it becomes relevant to look at both the civil society that supports such leaders and the one that resists populist advances. The key question that my research proposes to address is: What is the role of civil society in strengthening or undermining democracy under populist attacks? To answer this question the research will focus on the dispute around women and sexual minorities rights in Brazil and Argentina to try to identify different civil society practices both in favour of and against democracy.
