In a recent interview with DW, Dr Thalia Gerzso expressed concerns over Uganda’s potential switch from a presidential to a parliamentary system, warning that the move could further entrench President Yoweri Museveni’s grip on power.
The proposed transition, which has sparked debate among Ugandan lawmakers and opposition figures, would see the East African nation shift from its current presidential system to one that vests more authority in a parliamentary framework. While a parliamentary system is not inherently undemocratic, Gerzso explained that under Uganda's current political climate, it could actually weaken democratic governance.
“There's nothing fundamentally wrong with a parliamentary system,” Gerzso said. “However, in the case of Uganda, where the legislature is notably weak, this transition poses serious risks.”
