Week 9: Learning Community Newsletter

Posted on 22 April 2024

All the latest from the department

Only three more weeks to go folks! As we reach the end of the year I would like to draw attention to the YUSU Excellence Awards. These are a great opportunity to highlight members of the department that have helped you or had a positive impact on your time at York.

The Coffee Morning is on at its usual time of 09:30-11:00 on Wednesday in the Politics Reception area. It'll be great to see you there.

Other than that, I hope you have a good week!

John Evemy (Learning Community Officer)

Numerical Reasoning for employability Workshop

Tuesday 23 April,

13:00-14:00, online only

Are you applying (or going to apply) for placements, graduate schemes or internships?
If you are applying to large organisations (such as gsk or the civil service), you may be asked to complete a numerical reasoning test early in the application stage, and possibly again at assessment centre stage.

This interactive Workshop from the Maths Skills Centre will give you advice and guidance on taking these tests. During the workshop we will explore how to answer typical numerical reasoning test questions and point you to some useful resources. This will be a hands-on session involving you having a go at questions from up-to-date employer tests with practical methods for solving problems in the quickest way. We will also introduce you to the very useful site AssessmentDay with free practice tests and full solutions.

Armed with Words: Interpreting the War in Afghanistan (2001-2021)

Thursday 25 April

3.30-5.30 pm, Spring Lane Building (book tickets)
This Visual Ethics Network event will explore the ethics of photography and visual activism by looking at a collaborative project entitled We Are Here, Because You Were There: Afghan Interpreters in the UK, created by the photographer Andy Barnham and Professor Sara de Jong from the Politics and International Relations Department of the University of York. This ongoing project explores the trauma of war and how it was experienced by both Afghan interpreters who worked for the British Army in the Afghanistan war (2001-2021) and their familie and by veteran advocates. By involving both portrait photography and testimonies, the visual outcome incorporates visually edited images and quotes by the aforementioned interviewed participants. The event will tackle questions of trauma, injury, military intervention, forced migration, political solidarity and how these are approached and made visible through research-based portrait photography and visual design, as a way of addressing and interrogating complex ethical issues.

The series is currently exhibited at Impressions Gallery, Bradford (on until 04 May 2024) and sections can be viewed at the ground floor of the Spring Lane Building of the University of York.
