Overview:

Join us for this community-focused evening reception, Resisting Hate Crime, Racism & Intolerance, which follows on from the daytime ‘Race’ and Socially Engaged Research: Open and Inclusive Conference. The University of York’s Anti-Racism Working Group has partnered with York’s Refugee Week activities to host this 2-hour event at York St John University’s Holgate Dining Room. It is co-sponsored by our 5 different Conference funders and the Peace Lab at University of York, and is open to all conference delegates, local community groups and members, and anybody interested in anti-racist work and activism. The reception is an opportunity to meet with a broad range of people who are passionate about anti-racist work, and builds upon the daytime conference aims and themes of putting praxis into practice.

We will be joined by an incredible keynote speaker, Sarli Nana from Migrants Organise, who will discuss his experiences of the UK asylum system and his decades spent fighting for migrants’ rights, followed by suggestions of what institutions, academics and community members can do to resist hate crime, racism and intolerance. Following Sarli’s contribution, we will have a short roundtable of 4 local community members who will respond and reflect on the keynote. Poster and visual or art displays will be presented relating to the 2024 conference theme of Resistance, Joy and Community in Hostile Environments and will be open for any attendees to visit throughout the event.

The reception will offer non-alcoholic drinks alongside alcohol, with canapes. There will be seating available and we request that any dietary or accessibility requirements are noted on this form. This form will close on 12 June 2024.
