Event details

The June 2023 the Department for Work and Pensions LINK Seminar Series presents "Administrative fairness in the digital welfare state" by Jed Meers and Simon Halliday of the Administrative Fairness Lab at York.

Existing research has proposed various models of administrative fairness in social security systems, featuring key themes such as: participation, accuracy, formality, speed, and justification. However, these models often fail to account for the digital transformation of the social security decision-making process (especially in Universal Credit) and the perspectives of people who are most likely to be impacted by these processes. This presentation will introduce and share some early-stage empirical findings from a mixed-methods project - funded by the Nuffield Foundation and in collaboration with a range of partners (including the DWP) - that aims to explore what the public thinks administrative fairness looks like in the era of the digital welfare state.
