Event details

The York Policy Engine is delighted to host a training event, split over two sessions, led by the Open Innovation Team (OIT), to help you develop skills for communicating with policymakers. Experienced editors will help you learn how to make your research evidence memorable. You will receive advice about how to apply these principles, which will help policymakers remember you and your work.

Through this training, participants can expect to gain the following skills:

  1. Understanding Storytelling Principles: a solid understanding of the principles of storytelling and why it is an effective tool for policy engagement
  2. Crafting a Narrative: how to develop compelling narratives about your research that can engage a policy audience, illustrating relevant and potential impact of your work
  3. Simplifying the Story: how to simplify complex research into clear, concise, and relatable stories, without losing the integrity or nuance of your findings
  4. Tailoring the Message: how to adapt your research narratives for different policy audiences, taking into account their interests, knowledge, and context
  5. Building Confidence: feel more confident in your ability to communicate your  research in a persuasive, engaging, and policy-relevant manner

The training will be carried out over two, 90 min sessions which are intended to follow-on from one another, therefore to secure a place you must be able to commit to both of the sessions.

Sessions will be online on the following dates;

Thursday 29 June 1.30-3pm

Thursday 6 July 1.30-3pm

Who is this training for?

These sessions are open to all research and academic staff (including PhD students) and professional services staff looking to receive support to communicate research findings to engage with policymakers.

We will need to allocate places on a first-come, first-served basis. If you are interested please fill in the GoogleForm by 5pm Monday 26th June and we will be in touch about securing your place. Do not worry if you miss out, we will be running more sessions later in the year.
