Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) research investigates the properties of networks of small sensing and processing devices with wireless communication. At York, we design neighbour discovery, medium access control and routing protocols tailored to the needs of specific deployments.
We have pioneered the application of machine learning techniques to the medium access control problem and have developed a range of low complexity protocols capable of self-organising in heavily constrained environments. This includes underwater WSNs and scenarios where devices are solely powered through energy harvesting.
