Student industrial placements can help a business to innovate and grow by providing access to the School's research resources and academic knowledge; offer an affordable recruitment option and identify future graduate talent. The School of Physics, Electronic and Technology offers several different ways for businesses to a host a student or to organise a campus-based research & development project.
All single subject BSc / MPhys degree programmes are available with a Year in Industry. The industrial placement takes place in the penultimate year of the degree programme. To be classed as a completed Year in Industry a student must spend a minimum of nine months, ideally 12 months with the host company.
These projects constitute a third (40 credits out of 120) of the final year marks and students are expected to devote 10 hours per week each for 20 weeks. Usually consisting of between two-four students these projects are based at the department.
School-based projects: Students spend half their time (600 hours) in Year 4 working on an advanced research project in the School.
Company-based projects: Students spend four months full-time in industry from mid-January to mid-June of their final year. In this case, students have sat all their final year examinations prior to joining the company.
