Virtual reality (VR) and spatial audio labs
Our VR and spatial audio labs feature state-of-the-art equipment for development and production of VR experiences and immersive audio. Split across two campus locations, these labs can be used by undergraduate and postgraduate project students and researchers.
Virtual reality suite
This lab includes:
- Two individual PC-based workstations each with their own control surface, individually configured for stereo and Ambisonic audio monitoring
- VR headsets with controllers
- Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 3rd Generation audio interface with Rode NT2A for vocal work
- Avid Artist series control surface
Spatial audio listening room
Our audio lab includes:
- bespoke spherical loudspeaker array, comprising 50 full-range Genelec speakers, driven by a Dante-enabled audio system (this permits the reproduction of Ambisonic source material up to 5th order)
- high-resolution motion tracking system to facilitate head-tracked binaural reproduction research
- a range of 3D microphones including first- and second-order Ambisonic mics and a 32-channel Eigenmike, as well as a GRAS KEMAR manikin
- a range of VR headsets to enable VR research, including the Oculus Quest 2 and HTC Vive Pro.
