Visiting Researchers

The Department welcomes academic visitors from universities inside and outside of the UK for periods of up to one year. The following guidance is for researchers who seek to undertake an individual or collaborative programme of research while visiting the Department of Philosophy at York. Undergraduate and postgraduate students who wish to visit should instead follow the University’s guidance for visiting students.

How to apply

  1. You will need to obtain the support of an academic host. Please contact an appropriate member of staff informally, in order to explain the purpose and duration of your proposed visit, as well as how it will complement and enhance departmental research activities.
  2. Once a staff member has agreed to act as host for your visit, please prepare the following:
    1. A document of no more than 1000 words, including details of (a) the proposed dates and duration of your stay; (b) your proposed project; (c) your academic host and any previous, current, or planned research collaboration with them, (d) how your project will complement departmental research activities; (e) how you will fund your stay
    2. An academic CV (any length)
    3. A short letter of support from a senior academic external to the University of York who is familiar with your research. Where applicable, this should be a current colleague.
  3. These documents should be emailed to the Chair of the Departmental Research Committee, Professor Matthew Ratcliffe at matthew.ratcliffe@york.ac.uk. There are no set deadlines for applications.

Facilities

If your application is approved, you will be offered:

  • a University of York email address and use of University and Department IT facilities
  • access to the University Library
  • an invitation to participate in all departmental research events and activities
  • an opportunity to present your research at our research colloquium, our staff work-inprogress group, or another suitable forum

All academic visitors are expected to meet the same high standards of professional conduct as employees of the University throughout the duration of their stay.
