Our vision

We're shaping the future of society in the UK and globally through our research. By working with policy makers, businesses, charities and social organisations we can find solutions to urgent social problems.

Our passion for research is embedded in our teaching. We offer modules that develop both subject-specific knowledge and practical research skills. This opens up a wide range of career paths for students while equipping them with knowledge and skills to make a difference in the world.

We bring together a wide range of expertise. Our academic strengths include:

  • crime and deviance
  • health and illness
  • gender and sexuality
  • language and interaction
  • artificial intelligence
  • digital media.

We're one of the most vibrant and internationally-recognised sociology departments in the world. Our students learn how to think sociologically and get to discuss the most hard-hitting sociological issues of our time, with passionate academics many of whom are leaders in their field.

Our facilities

The Department of Sociology is based on Campus East in the Law and Sociology Building. Modern architecture mixes with lakes, trees and wildflower meadows to create a productive learning and research environment.

As a Sociology student, you'll have access to study spaces, our problem-based learning suite and the Sociology Lounge, which provides a space for staff and students to socialise.

Equality, diversity and inclusion

The Department of Sociology is committed to being inclusive and supportive for all. We actively work to sustain and foster a culture in which all staff and students feel included and valued.

We are proud to hold an Athena Swan Bronze Award in recognition of our commitment to gender equality and strive to put equality, diversity and inclusion at the centre of all we do.
