The University claimed the top spot in the region (Yorks and Humber) and also sits 17th nationally, according to The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2023.
The authors of the guide said York has risen eight places to rank ninth in the research quality index, which has helped to lift the University two places in the overall rankings. The guide also highlighted our “impressive performance” in the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021).
Highly skilled jobs
The paper also cited our high rates of graduate employment, with the latest figures showing that more than four in five (82 per cent) York graduates were in highly skilled jobs or further study 15 months after finishing their degree.
Other initiatives highlighted by the guide include our University of Sanctuary status in 2020, demonstrating our commitment to offering a safe place for refugees, asylum seekers and other forced migrants, and our signing of the Social Mobility Pledge — a coalition of businesses and universities that have vowed to put levelling-up at the heart of their operations.
The Times & Sunday Times ranking follows the recent announcement that the University has been shortlisted in three categories at the Times Higher Education (THE) Awards 2022.
Oscars of higher education
The nominations are for International Collaboration of the Year, Outstanding Support for Students and Outstanding Technician of the Year.
The winners of the awards, which are known as the "Oscars of higher education", will be announced in November in London.
Commenting on The Times & Sunday Times ranking, Vice-Chancellor Professor Charlie Jeffery said: “We are really looking forward to our start of term, so this is brilliant news as we welcome our new and returning students.
“Our improved position reflects a huge amount of hard work and dedication by our staff across several years, including the very difficult circumstances of the pandemic.
“My thanks go to them as they look ahead to new ways of strengthening the student experience and driving on the impact our research brings to society."
