More than 40 York scientists will take part in the three day international Pint of Science festival that will see thousands of researchers speaking in 100 cities across 12 countries.
Spanning a huge array of topics, from ‘innovation and transparency in healthcare’ to the ‘secrets of quantum physics’ and ‘why we are what we eat’, talks will include live experiments, demonstrations, discussions and opportunities to win prizes.
York pubs taking part include The Duke of York, Brigantes, The Blue Boar, The Eagle and Child, The Winning Post and Fulford Arms.
Established four years ago by a group of UK postgraduate and postdoctoral researchersconcerned with the way the media portrays science, the festival aims to establish a direct relationship with the public by bringing the latest research to the nation’s favourite locals.
Dr Pierre-Philippe Dechant, York Pint of Science Coordinator, said: “The University of York is full of scientists busily doing cutting-edge research in a huge range of scientific disciplines, but they rarely get to share their work with the rest of the city. Pint of Science gives them the opportunity to do just that in everyone’s favourite venue, the pub! The events aren’t just for science-types, we’ll be exploring themes that touch on art, music, history as well as the environment and health. After the success of last year’s festival we’re back with bigger venues and extra events. We can’t wait!”
Dr Praveen Paul, Festival Co-Founder, said: “We want to give people the opportunity to learn about the latest scientific developments directly from the scientists themselves – and then feel free to question them. At first we were surprised by the public's appetite for these events and by the interest from both volunteer organisers and speakers. The rapid growth of Pint of Science from a grassroots effort to a global movement has shown that we may have been underestimating both scientists and the public, and that there is a greater need for more events like these”.
