Highlights of the event include a professional team of dragon and lion dancers, fashion show, Chinese folk music orchestra and even a performance on the art of making tea!
The Chinese New Year Gala is being held at 7pm on 19 February at the University’s Central Hall and will be a celebration of the Spring and Lantern Festivals, heralding the Year of the Monkey.
The event aims to help the whole community understand more about traditional Chinese culture, as well as helping make Chinese students feel at home.
Miss Ling Ge, chair of the Chinese Students & Scholars Association York (CSSAYork), said tickets were still available.
She said: “The event is not only an opportunity for our Chinese students to celebrate some important festivals in our calendar and feel at home, but it encourages diversified interdisciplinary communicationand gives the wider community the chance to experience a flavour of Chinese culture.
“There are some important cultural ties between York and China and this is a fantastic opportunity for students, staff and the wider community to come together and celebrate.”
Special guests at the event will include representatives from the Chinese Council in Manchester and senior members of the University’s academic staff.
