York student filmmakers’ work goes on show at LUMA Film Festival

Posted on 16 June 2014

Student filmmakers from the University of York will showcase their innovative work at the LUMA Film Festival this weekend.

Part of the York Festival of Ideas, LUMA from 21 to 22 June will celebrate the achievements of students from York’s Department of Theatre, Film and Television, and allow fellow students, the public, and industry professionals to see the work of the next generation of filmmakers.

The student-organised LUMA Film Festival, which is sponsored by Orillo Productions, will feature film screenings, workshops and two keynote speakers.

Charlie Higson will talk about his career, concentrating on his work as a writer, producer and director on TV shows such as The Fast Show and Agatha Christie’s Marple, as well as his experiences of developing film scripts. Keenan Foley, from York-based production company Orillo Productions, will explain how young filmmakers can create a profitable production company in Yorkshire.

University of York student Harry Woodman, one of the LUMA Festival organisers, said: “LUMA is free to all and perfect for anyone interested in film or television. With a variety of films on offer, alongside some great workshops and guest speakers, the weekend is shaping up to be a fantastic event.”

In addition to the main Gala Screenings each evening in the Department of Theatre, Film and Television’s digital cinema, the event includes smaller screenings of all the films entered into the Festival, as well as workshops such as ‘fight choreography for film’ and a screenwriters’ workshop.

Andrew Higson, Head of the Department of Theatre, Film and Television, said: “This will be the third year that our students have organised the LUMA Film Festival. The two previous events have been superbly well organised and have given audiences the chance to watch some excellent films. I fully expect this year's festival to be just as good, as we have some wonderful talent in the Department.”

Over the last two years, York student filmmakers have received local, national and international recognition and awards, including from the Royal Television Society, the Watersprite Film Festival, the Monaco International Film Festival and the Bill Vinten Guild of Television Cameramen University Awards.
