York student filmmakers in the running for top national awards

The awards on Friday, 17 May celebrate the best in student television from across the UK. Undergraduate and Postgraduate Awards will be presented across four categories - Animation, Entertainment, Factual and Fiction.
Two Fires by Oliver Hadlow-Martin and Danny Carter is a contender in the Undergraduate Factual category, while Oscar Frostad Udbye’s film Things That Happened on the 9th March has been shortlisted in the Undergraduate Fiction category.
All three York students are studying towards a BSc in Film and Television Production in the University’s Department of Theatre, Film and Television.
Oscar Frostad Udbye said: “I’m thrilled to reach the finals and am very much looking forward to the award ceremony in London, as this will be a good chance to talk to and connect with students from other courses across the UK.
“The film and television production course at the University of York is unique in the way it provides an in-depth technical aspect as well as giving us the chance to develop as strong storytellers, and I really think this reflects on the quality of work of the student body as a whole. I am proud to be one of the first nominees from York, but I am sure there will be many more in the years to come!”
Professor Andrew Higson, Head of the Department of Theatre, Film and Television, said: “This is a remarkable achievement and speaks volumes not just about the abilities of our students but also about the quality of teaching and training provided by my colleagues and the superb facilities at our disposal. The standard of filmmaking on display in these films is impressively mature, highly imaginative and technically assured.”

The event at the Barbican, London will be hosted by Lucy Beaumont, winner of the BBC New Comedy Award 2012, and chaired by Patrick Younge, Chief Creative Officer, BBC Vision Productions.
The two shortlisted films were first screened last summer at the Luma Film Festival - a brand new annual film festival organised by York students to celebrate and champion their work. They went on to win the top awards in their categories at the Yorkshire Region RTS Student Awards last November.
John Mateer, who leads the BSc in Film and Television Production, said: “We could not be prouder of Oliver, Danny and Oscar. They are highly talented filmmakers and have very bright futures. It is also remarkable that we are only one of two universities that has two films in the national undergraduate finals. This is a clear indication that our course, which is only in its third year, is working very well.”
The University’s Department of Theatre, Film and Television offers some of the best professional production facilities of any UK university, boasting a media complex of two theatres, two television studios, a large sound stage, production labs, extensive post-production facilities and a digital cinema, as well as rehearsal and dressing rooms.
It was designed following extensive consultation with industry professionals, and is purpose-built to support and foster interactions between the University, researchers and business.
