The event, organised by the University’s York Management School and Harrowells Solicitors in York and Winston Solicitors in Leeds, was held in partnership with the North Yorkshire branch of the Chartered Institute of Personnel (CIPD) in response to the rising numbers of employment tribunal cases in recent years.
Over 100 representatives from local businesses attended the event, held at the University’s new Heslington East campus.
Professor Jill Schofield, School Dean, York Management School, said: “The aim of the mock employment tribunal was to show business leaders and HR professionals from the public and private sectors how to minimise the risk of tribunal claims, improve preparation for tribunals and enhance their chances of successfully defending tribunal claims.
“The mock tribunal presented employers with an invaluable opportunity to experience a live mock tribunal hearing with cross-examination and legal arguments. By allowing them to hear all the evidence and advocates’ submissions before having the opportunity to vote on the outcome, it enabled them to see exactly how cases are decided in practice and thus gain a better understanding of the workings of a tribunal.”

Sue Porter, Chair of CIPD York, said: “This event provided an excellent opportunity for employers and HR professionals to work together to understand what is involved in, and how to effectively manage, an employment tribunal. Local employers gained a valuable insight into the importance of setting and communicating clear boundaries in terms of acceptable workplace behaviour.”
