Business community invited to groundbreaking Beeronomics conference

Beeronomics 2013, hosted by the University’s York Management School, includes a one-day event open to all, when MPs and brewing industry representatives will take part in a panel debate discussing issues affecting the industry.
Speakers will include Mike Benner, Chief Executive of CAMRA, Andrew Griffiths MP, Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group and Andrew Tighe, Policy Director of the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA).
The event on Friday, 20 September will also include a keynote speech by Charles Bamforth, Anheuser-Busch Endowed Professor of Brewing Science, University of California, Davis, USA, who specialises in the science of malting and brewing.
Held in the UK for the first time, Beeronomics 2013, from 18 to 21 September, will bring together academics from across the globe, the business community and policy makers to discuss high-quality economic research related to beer and brewing. Topics covered will include policy, marketing and consumption, industrial organisations and innovation.
Dr Ignazio Cabras, from the York Management School and Chair of the conference Steering Committee, said: “We have organised a series of events to run alongside the main academic conference. In particular, delegates will meet representatives of City of York Council and a number of local brewers in two separate events at the Mansion House and the Guildhall, and will have the chance to visit the annual York Beer Festival at the Knavesmire. These events represent invaluable opportunities, especially for those international academics and researchers who will register for the conference to engage with the British brewing industry.
“For those unable to attend the whole conference, the one-day pass allows entrance to the panel debate - which provides an opportunity for the brewing industry to enter a constructive dialogue with policy-makers about the issues affecting them – as well as keynote speeches.”
Beer and brewing is of major economic importance, both to the UK as a whole and the Yorkshire and Humber region. Beeronomics 2013 will present the latest research and allow the brewing industry, the academic community and policy-makers to share and discuss ideas.
According to the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA), almost 949,000 jobs in the UK are sustained through the activity of the beer and pub sector, with £12.9bn of wages and £19.5bn of gross value added (GVA). The sector employs a high proportion of young workers, with about 300,000 workers under 25.
Professor David Higgins, from the York Management School and Chair of the Scientific Committee, said: “We have received an impressive array of papers covering issues which have direct policy relevance, for example: taxation; the human and social impact of alcohol consumption, and the determinants of consumer choice.
“In addition, the academic programme addresses more specialist topics including brands and identity, industrial concentration and the growth and development of micro-brewing and micro-brewers. One of the key attractions of this conference is that these themes are examined from a variety of geographical, political economy, and methodological perspectives.”
