Electronics has received a Bronze award, which recognises that in addition to institution-wide policies, the Department has identified particular challenges and is planning activities to address these in the future.
The head of Electronics at York, Professor David Howard, said: “I am absolutely thrilled by this award. It reflects the Department's deep commitment to eliminating gender bias and encouraging career development in all our staff while encouraging women into electronics where they are heavily under represented.”
Athena SWAN is jointly owned by Equality Challenge Unit and the UKRC. It is funded by Equality Challenge Unit, the Royal Society, Biochemical Society and the Department of Health.
The latest award is in addition to York’s existing Athena SWAN accolades. Earlier this year, three other departments at York – Physics, Psychology and Computer Science achieved Athena Swan accreditation. Physics and Psychology received Silver awards and Computer Science received Bronze.
The University already holds a Bronze award, while Chemistry was the first Department in the UK to receive a Gold award. The Department of Biology holds a Silver award.
