By getting involved as advisers, the volunteers will, for example, be helping the Department’s Mental Health Research Group improve mental health support and therapy options for older people.
We are looking for interested members of the public, as well as those with either personal experience of a mental health condition, or who have cared for someone with mental illness
Dr Friederike Ziegler
The Mental Health Research Group, headed by Professor Simon Gilbody, conducts research into a number of mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorders and schizophrenia. A primary aim of the research group is to test new therapies for these conditions and to improve the availability of treatments to patients in the NHS.
Dr Friederike Ziegler, from the University’s Department of Health Sciences, said: “By getting involved in a small, friendly advisory group, people will have an opportunity to contribute to the future of mental health provision and to gain knowledge about current issues in mental health. Researchers value the contribution members of the public can make based on their personal experience and interests.
“We are looking for interested members of the public, as well as those with either personal experience of a mental health condition, or who have cared for someone with mental illness.”
Training and support will be provided and expenses paid. If necessary transport, a translator or companion support can be arranged.
Anyone interested in joining the advisory group can contact Dr Friederike Ziegler on 01904 321651 or email friederike.ziegler@york.ac.uk for further information.
