Technology changing the face of heritage preservation

Posted on 17 January 2012

A University of York event will examine the impact of digital technologies on the preservation of our cultural heritage.

From buildings, monuments and works of art, to folklore and language, digital technologies are changing the face of heritage preservation. Computer virtualisation and auralisations are now commonplace, while media archiving and digital restoration are widespread.

The Digital Humanities Symposium: Virtualisation and Heritage on 25 February will bring together researchers and practitioners in the digital humanities who focus on heritage to discuss these changes.

Digital humanities – sometimes called humanities computing – combines methodologies from the traditional humanities disciplines such as history, art and music, with the tools provided by computing such as data visualisation, information retrieval and data mining.

Mariana Lopez, from the University of York’s Department of Theatre, Film and Television, said: “Digital technologies are having a great impact on the field of cultural heritage preservation in previously unthought of ways.  As access to high-end computer equipment increases, researchers are able to produce increasingly sophisticated computer models to aid their research in cultural heritage, while high-speed internet access allows for quick dissemination across the world.

“Topics at the symposium are likely to include acoustic and virtual modelling of heritage sites, data capture, virtual modelling for public display, and the ethics of heritage preservation and reconstruction.”

Anyone interested in presenting a paper, poster or workshop is invited to send a 300 word abstract to virtualisationandheritage@gmail.com before 22 January.

To register for the free event, which will be held at the University’s Department of Theatre, Film and Television on Saturday, 25 February from 10am to 6.30pm, visit www.york.ac.uk/tftv/news-events/events/2012/digital-humanities-symposium/ The deadline for registration is 11 February.
