Street art goes on show

Posted on 23 November 2012

A new exhibition at the Norman Rea Gallery at the University of York brings street art into the student-run gallery for the first time.

Illustration by Miss Hazard, aka artist Harriet Wood

Featuring work by “Miss Hazard” (aka Harriet Wood), a Bristol-based urban artist, illustrator and designer, the exhibition features a new collection of sprayed canvases and detailed black and white illustrations on paper, accompanied by freestanding wall murals.

The exhibition, which is Miss Hazard’s first solo show, is open to all, and runs from 26 November to 9 December. It is curated by Alexandra Jeffrey, an undergraduate student in the Department of History of Art.

Miss Hazard’s influences are tribal and communal art from around the world, with her portfolio including design for print, fashion and fabric, typography, album design and street art. Most of her work takes the form of hand painted murals, canvasses and larger installation works such as her hand painted wall mural at the Evil Eye Lounge on Stonegate, York.

The Norman Rea Gallery is run entirely by University students. Situated above The Courtyard in Derwent College, the gallery hosts exciting exhibitions throughout the year and promotes the work of both student and professional artists.

Mayssa Kachicho, Director of the Norman Rea Gallery, said: “Miss Hazard finds her inspiration in the contrast of cultures and the way different people live their lives, with her work focussing around the ideas of creating a peaceful and thought-provoking atmosphere.

“This exhibition will bring street art inside the walls of the Norman Rea Gallery for the first time, offering an exciting alternative perspective on both the gallery space and the art within.”

The free exhibition is on show from 26 November to 9 December, weekdays from 9am to 5pm. For further information visit www.thenormanreagallery.co.uk.
