Top film and TV professionals to judge York's new festival of student film

Posted on 22 June 2012

Students from the University of York's Department of Theatre, Film and Television are gearing up for a brand new annual film festival to celebrate and champion their work.

Using the faculty's modern facilities, the Luma Film Festival, on 30 June, will give emerging filmmakers the chance to showcase their works to industry professionals and the public.

Through half a day of screenings, events and celebration, the festival is also designed to both enhance the reputation of the Department, and to provide a platform for its students to reach out to a wider audience. Films submitted for consideration range from intimate documentaries and powerful character studies, to photographic stop motion animation and fast-paced music videos.

“This Festival is a fantastic opportunity for students in the Department of Theatre, Film and Television to show both the industry and the public what they can do,” said Greg Dyke, Chancellor of the University of York, and former Director General of the BBC. “Exposure like this is a hugely important and rewarding first step in what I am confident will be great careers for these talented young film-makers.”

Undertaking the task of reviewing and selecting submitted films for display is an independent panel made up of figures from across the UK’s film and television industry. They include Andy Culpin, Managing Director of 12 Yard Productions, whose credits include hit BBC shows The Weakest Link and Eggheads, Editor and Composer Joe Walker, Denys Blakeway, Head of Blakeway Productions, James Levison, Head of Wingbeat Pictures and Producer Alan Latham of Green Screen Productions.

The Department of Theatre, Film and Television was formally opened in July 2011. Hailed as a ‘world class facility’ by Richard Deverell, Chief Operating Officer for BBC North, the Department also launched Heslington Studios - its commercial arm for professional equipment and facility hire - in February this year.

The Luma Film Festival takes place on Saturday, 30 June from 2 to 6pm at the University’s Department of Theatre, Film and Television. Open to all, admission is free. Email invitations@lumafilmfestival.com to book a seat. See www.facebook.com/LumaFilmFestival for more information.
