Enterprising school children take part in chocolate challenge

Posted on 28 February 2012

Over 350 primary school children are taking part in two Enterprise Days at the University of York, designed to raise aspirations and give students an insight into university life.

The events, on 29 February and 2 March, are a collaboration between Tadcaster Grammar School (Business and Enterprise College), the York Entrepreneurs Society – a University student-run group, and the University’s Student Recruitment and Admissions Unit.

The aim of the Enterprise Day is to teach school students some new skills and give them a taster of enterprise in a fun and stimulating environment.

The children are from 12 schools which feed into Tadcaster Grammar School. They will be taking part in a Chocolate Challenge with teams ‘hired’ by a chocolate company for the day to help design a new chocolate bar to bring in more sales. The chocolate bar designs will be judged by Nestlé.

Amy Clow, Widening Participation Officer at the University, said: “The aim of the Enterprise Day is to teach school students some new skills and give them a taster of enterprise in a fun and stimulating environment.”

The events will take place at the University’s stunning Ron Cooke Hub, which sits at the heart of the University’s £750 million Heslington East campus extension.

Amanda Crossley, Partnership Development Director at Tadcaster Grammar School, said: “Tadcaster Grammar School has a commitment to widening participation and engaging with our community. The school’s Partnership Team manages a wide and varied number of opportunities and projects, such as this one, for students, families and the wider community throughout the year particularly around transition.”

The Enterprise Day is part of a wider initiative by the York Entrepreneurs Society to forge stronger links with local schools, businesses, the University and wider community. Funding for the event is from Tadcaster Grammar Schools Enterprise Learning Board Funding and the University of York.
