MP David Blunkett debates Labour's future

Former Home Secretary the Rt Hon David Blunkett MP will discuss the future of the British Labour Party at a public lecture at the University of York next week.

The Labour Member of Parliament for Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough will deliver the 2012 School of Social and Political Sciences Lecture on ‘Where now for Labour?’

Blind since birth, Sheffield-born Mr Blunkett rose to become Education and Employment Secretary, Home Secretary and Work and Pensions Secretary in Tony Blair’s Cabinet following Labour’s victory in the 1997 general election.

In his lecture, which is fully booked, at the National Science Learning Centre on Wednesday, 30 May, David Blunkett will discuss the challenges facing Labour in opposition.

Brian Loader, Director of the University’s School of Social and Political Sciences, said: “We are extremely pleased to welcome David Blunkett, who has been a leading political figure in this country for the past two decades, to York.”

Mr Blunkett’s political career began in local government as a member of Sheffield City Council where he served for 18 years, seven of those as Leader of the Council.

As Secretary of State for Education and Employment he launched the Learning & Skills Councils, created Job Centre Plus and chaired the Equal Opportunities Commission. Later as Home Secretary, he took charge of security, immigration and policing. Since leaving the Front Bench, David Blunkett has continued to inform Government policy on the voluntary sector, social mobility and affordable credit.

Admission to the lecture is by free ticket only and this event is now fully booked.
