Royal Academy of Engineering honours

Posted on 26 July 2011

Two University of York academics have been elected Fellows of the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Professor Jim Woodcock, of the Department of Computer Science and Professor Andy Marvin, of the Department of Electronics, are among 59 Fellows joining the Academy, representing the most eminent names in the profession from the UK and overseas.

Professor Woodcock, who holds the Anniversary Chair of Software Engineering, carries out research into industrial-scale software engineering and teaches on the MSc in Software Engineering.

He said: “I’m very pleased to have been recognised by this honour. Being made a Fellow of the Royal Academy and my work at York will combine to help the Academy’s aim to promote excellence in engineering.”

Professor Andy Marvin leads the Physical Layer Research Group within York’s Department of Electronics and is Technical Director of York EMC Services Ltd, of which he was also a founder.

He said: “I am delighted to be the first serving member of the Electronics Department at York to be honoured by the Royal Academy and I would like to acknowledge the support of my colleagues in the research group and company over many years.”

Professor Woodcock is a Visiting Professor at Trinity College Dublin, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Federal University of Pernambuco and a Visiting Fellow at the University of Oxford. He has acted as a consulting software engineer for many organisations including British Energy, DEC, General Dynamics, IBM, LDRA, Logica, QinetiQ, and the UK Health and Safety Executive.

Professor Marvin’s research interest is in metrology, mainly in electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), and he acts as an advisor to the UK’s National Measurement System as well as working on international standards development. Last year Professor Marvin was elected a Fellow of IEEE, the world’s largest professional association for the advancement of technology. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the IEEE EMC Society, Associate Editor IEEE Transactions on Electromagnetic Compatibility and was Chair of Faculty of the IEEE EMC Society Global EMC University.

Notes to editors:

  • The Royal Academy citation for Professor Jim Woodcock reads: Distinguished for elucidation of sound mathematical principles underlying the practice of software engineering. His research method is based on interactions between abstract theory, pilot development, industrial collaboration, consultancy, tool development, and practical evaluation. He leads the experimental strand of the International Verified Software Initiative.
  • The Royal Academy citation for Professor Andy Marvin reads:  Professor Marvin combines a highly distinguished academic research career with a significant industrial activity involving founding and directing a world renowned Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) company, technical innovation in EMC metrology, sought after CPD lecturing, and outstanding international standards leadership. His work continues in all these fields with new initiatives in industrially led research.
  • Founded in 1976, the Royal Academy of Engineering promotes the engineering and technological welfare of the country. Its fellowship – comprising the UK’s most eminent engineers – provides the leadership and expertise for its activities, which focus on the relationships between engineering, technology, and the quality of life. As a national academy, it provides independent and impartial advice to Government; works to secure the next generation of engineers; and provides a voice for Britain’s engineering community.
