'Good artists borrow, great artists steal'

Posted on 17 March 2011

The Norman Rea Gallery at the University of York is calling on local artists to contribute to an exhibition by copying the ideas of art's famous names.

Organisers of the 2011 summer open exhibition Wink would like members of the local community as well as students to submit pieces of artwork which intentionally copy the style, theme or meaning of someone else’s work.

We want artists to provide their own version of an artwork many of us are familiar with

Samia Calbayrac, Director of The Norman Rea Gallery

Samia Calbayrac, Director of The Norman Rea Gallery, said: “Pablo Picasso once said ‘Good artists borrow, great artists steal’. Just as Picasso turned his hand to Velazquez’s Las Meninas and Warhol paid homage to Leonardo Da Vinci’s The Last Supper and Mona Lisa, we want artists to provide their own version of an artwork many of us are familiar with. We need something reinvented, whether in the same medium or another of the artist’s choice.”

The most witty and creative will be selected for display and permission will be given for anyone to sell their work if they wish. Organisers are keen to receive sculpture, installation, video and performance, as well as paintings and photographs.

The event follows the success of last year’s open exhibition Light. Work for this year’s exhibition, which will open on Monday, 6 June 2011, needs to be submitted before the end of May.
