The Autumn Academy at the Zoo will allow children aged from seven to 10 to become a ‘zoo trooper’ and to get up close and personal with wild animals at the Flamingo Land Theme Park and Zoo near Malton.
Each day will be packed with fun learning opportunities, giving children a better understanding of the animals’ natural habitats, diets and survival in the wild. Children have a chance to be a scientist, explorer and even an animal tracker.
The week of activities from Monday, 24 October to Sunday, 30 October, has been organised by the Centre for the Integration of Research, Conservation and Learning (CIRCLE) – a jointly-funded venture between the University’s Environment Department and Flamingo Land.
The autumn academy follows two Summer Academy at the Zoo events in July and August which proved a huge hit with young children.

Cat Hickey, Zoo Education Strategist with CIRCLE, said: “The academies over the summer went really well with fantastic feedback from the children and their parents. Autumn Academy at the Zoo will feature games and creative activities with a wild side, exploring the zoo in scavenger hunts and creating their own zoo.
“The activities give children a chance to learn about conservation in a really interesting way. Over the summer they particularly enjoyed going behind the scenes and getting up close to the zoo’s fantastic collection of animals, around 20 per cent of which is at threat or extinct in the wild.”
The CIRCLE institute was launched in October 2010 and is playing an important role in protecting habitats and species both locally and internationally.
The Autumn Academy at the Zoo runs from 24 October to 30 October from 9am to 4:30pm daily. Places cost £25 a day, with a 20 per cent reduction for bookings of five days or more. The price includes all activities, a zoo explorer t-shirt and a folder highlighting all children saw and did during their time at the zoo. Places are limited so early booking is recommended.
