Adult learners honoured at awards ceremony

Posted on 20 December 2011

A special awards ceremony at the University of York celebrated the achievements of lifelong learning students from York and the surrounding area.

Around 70 adult learners and their families attended the event at Heslington Hall and were presented with certificates by Professor Mark Ormrod, Academic Coordinator for Arts and Humanities.

Most students on courses offered by the Centre for Lifelong Learning are from the York area, but this year also saw a number of students on distance learning programmes travel to the city to receive their awards. Some students have no previous experience of higher education while others have high level qualifications in a range of fields, not always related to what they have studied with the Centre.

Lesley Booth, Head of Lifelong Learning, said: “The University’s positive impact on the local community is always a great thing to celebrate, and we are very pleased to see such continued enthusiasm for learning from York’s adult population. After twenty-five years of offering such opportunities to the city, there remains a healthy appetite for learning and we hope to welcome more students to the University in January 2012.”

University certificates were awarded in the fields of humanities, local history, creative writing, psychology, contemporary Britain and archaeology. Some students rewarded have now studied on a part-time basis with the University for five years.

The annual event also recognised the achievements of learners from the Centre’s community outreach programme, funded by the York Settlement Trust and Aimhigher North Yorkshire, and supported by the City of York Council’s Family Learning Service and York Council for Voluntary Service. These programmes of study offer those with few - if any - previous qualifications the opportunity to re-engage and start a learning journey in higher education.

Every year the Centre for Lifelong Learning offers a range of accredited and non-accredited (Learning for Pleasure) courses as well as Saturday classes and online, distance learning courses. All courses are open to anyone with an interest in the subject covered.
