York Students share their skills with local business

Posted on 31 March 2011

Students at the University of York will be using their skills to benefit local businesses over the summer, thanks to a pioneering internship scheme.

In partnership with Science City York and Higher York, the Student Internship Bureau, based in the University’s Careers Service, places students on three-month projects in a wide range of business settings.

The Student Internship Scheme is well organised and we will use it again in the future

The University’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor for External Relations, Professor Colin Mellors, will launch the Summer 2011 programme at a breakfast showcasing event at the National Railway Museum on Tuesday 5 April, 7.30 – 8.30am.

Last year, the programme saw more than 30 students in placements ranging from launching student-friendly marketing for Northern Rail to developing a client management system for Mosaic Events.

Professor Mellors, who chairs Higher York’s Executive Group, said: “York student interns have demonstrated that they can produce results which benefit businesses. The internships provide unique, hands-on learning experiences for the students.”

Kamran Hussain, Revenue Protection Manager, East Coast Rail said: "The Student Internship Scheme is well organised and we will use it again in the future. Our Intern represented a highly able, cost effective and dedicated resource for the business."
