The York team of Andrew Wood, Stuart Scott and Steve Preston served up an impressive three course meal to beat off competition from 13 rivals, to win the gold medal in the 2010 University Caterers’ Organisation (TUCO) University Chef of the Year competition in Blackpool. Executive Chef, Andrew Wood, also took the gold medal in the individual challenge sponsored by Knorr Foods.Andrew Wood, who has helped the University to win six gold medals in previous TUCO competitions, said: “This is very much a team event and it highlighted the talent we have on the campus.”
To repeat this success year on year is truly outstanding
Jon Greenwood, Director of Commercial Services
Steve Preston, Cook in Wentworth College, added: “This was the first time I had competed in this sort of event and I was really nervous, but once it got under way the team worked really well together. I’m chuffed to bits with the result.”
Previously, Ian Dickson, Chef at Wentworth College, competed in the Tilda Chef of the Year and came away with a highly creditable bronze medal. The event is a feature of the biennial Salon Culinaire de Londres which is part of the Hotelympia exhibition in London’s Excel Exhibition Centre.
The competition tested competitors to produce rice based dishes of the highest standard. Ian’s bronze medal entry featured a Yorkshire favourite -- fillet of Whitby cod -- but with an oriental twist, served with wild rice and red pepper sauce.
The University’s Director of Commercial Services, Jon Greenwood, said: “To win once is a great achievement but to repeat this success year on year is truly outstanding, and is testament to the training and development culture within the Catering section.
"It is especially pleasing to see Steve Preston on the National stage at his first event, I am sure we will taste more of Steve’s work over the next few years.”
