Professor Kendrick, who is currently Associate Dean for Clinical Research in the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences at the University of Southampton, will take up his new role in September.
He said: “In just a few years since it was established HYMS has already developed an excellent reputation for education and research, and I am really relishing working with the leading academics there to continue its development.”
Professor Kendrick qualified in medicine in 1981, going on to full-time general practice for five years before winning a fellowship to undertake his MD at St George’s, University of London, subsequently becoming Senior Lecturer and then Reader in General Practice and Primary Care there.
In 1998 he was appointed as Professor and Head of the Department of Primary Medical Care at the School of Medicine, University of Southampton. In 2001 he became Director of the Community Clinical Sciences Division of the School and took on his current role in 2008. He has continued to practise part-time as a GP in inner-city Southampton.

Professor Kendrick’s research has focused on the causes and management of common and costly mental health problems in primary care and he has published extensively, particularly on the primary care of depression, schizophrenia, and eating disorders. He led his group to third highest place for quality in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. He also led the very successful development of the Southampton clinical academic training scheme.
In 2001 he was made an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in recognition of his mental health research and in 2009 he was awarded the President’s Medal of the Royal College of General Practitioners.
HYMS was established in 2002 through a partnership between the Universities of York and Hull and has facilities on both campuses.

Professor Calie Pistorius, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hull, said: “In just eight years HYMS has established a strong reputation in undergraduate medical training and Professor Kendrick joins it at an exciting time as it develops its postgraduate and research programmes.”
