University of York turns eyes to the skies

Posted on 22 January 2010

The science of the stars will be explored in a day of events at the University of York.

Dr Marek Kukula, Public Astronomer at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, will give a public lecture on the latest findings from space exploration.

This event is an opportunity for people to find out more about how the Universe works

Dr David Jenkins

The lecture will be followed by a star party with the opportunity to observe the stars through a range of telescopes with the help of experts from the York Astronomical Society. Visitors will also be able to enjoy a planetarium show and other hands-on exhibits.

Earlier in the day, children from schools across Yorkshire will work with leading academics to make spectroscopes, as well as visiting the University’s observatory in an event organised by the Excellence Hub for Yorkshire and Humber.

Dr David Jenkins, from the Department of Physics, said: “The exploration of space is an area of scientific research that really captures the public’s attention.

“This event is an opportunity for people to find out more about how the Universe works, and how we’re trying to improve our understanding, in a fun and accessible way.”

Admission is by ticket only. This event is now fully booked.
