Taking the challenge to go green in 2010

Posted on 7 January 2010

Community groups are pledging to cut their carbon footprints by 10 per cent this year with the help of researchers from the University of York.

The York Green Street Challenge will be launched on Saturday with six teams signing pledge cards detailing the changes they will make to reduce their carbon emissions.

Neighbourhood teams from Scarcroft Road, Bishopthorpe Road and the Holgate areas of York are taking part alongside groups of parents from Heworth CE and Park Grove Primary Schools and St Edward’s Church.

The York Green Street Challenge is coordinated by the Stockholm Environment Institute at the University of York on behalf of the York Environment Partnership.

Over the next six months, University experts will give the teams advice in areas including energy, transport, recycling and composting which will help them cut their emissions and save money.

Dr Gary Haq, Green Street Challenge Coordinator, said: “Most people want to reduce their impact on the environment but many find it difficult to turn those good intentions into action.

“Taking part in the York Green Street Challenge is a fun way for people to join with their friends and neighbours and learn how they can lead greener lives.”

Teams that succeed in meeting the 10 per cent target will be entered in to a prize draw to win £1,000 worth of vouchers.

New teams of between seven and 10 people can enter The York Green Street Challenge until the end of January. For more information telephone (01904) 432917 or email info@climatetalk.org.uk.
