During his visit on Friday 30 July, he will see the Ron Cooke Hub – a striking nucleus building that will bring together researchers, staff, knowledge transfer companies, students and the public.
The new academic buildings will also house four departments – the Department of Theatre, Film and Television, the Department of Computer Science, The York Law School and The York Management School. Additionally, the development includes The Catalyst, a building that will give new businesses the opportunity to access the University’s facilities, teaching and research expertise.
The University’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Estates and Special Projects, Elizabeth Heaps, will brief Mr Bayley on the new buildings, and he will meet representatives of the main contractor, BAM Construction, including Construction Manager, Matthew Garnett.
Ms Heaps said: “These are exciting buildings with a range of innovative facilities which will create an invigorating academic environment and play an important community role by supporting the wider local and regional economy through knowledge transfer. They are being constructed on schedule and we are looking forward to using them.”
Hugh Bayley, who was a post graduate student and later a lecturer and research fellow in Health Economics at the University before becoming an MP, said: “York is one of the country’s best universities. I supported its new campus. It is good to see the construction work progressing and to visualise how the new buildings will look. £66 million of new buildings has created hundreds of construction jobs and in the long term the expanded campus will provide jobs for local people as well as a highly skilled workforce which will attract more new jobs and investment to the city.”
The first phase of the campus expansion at Heslington East is benefitting from more than £15 million of support from the European Regional Development Fund in Yorkshire and the Humber, part of a £19.74 million project led by Science City York developing new infrastructure to stimulate R&D and improve regional competitiveness in science and technology sectors.
