University intern helps York company’s efficiency drive

Posted on 30 March 2010

University of York Chemistry graduate Derfogail Delcassian is helping a York conference and events management business to develop a new client management system.

Mosaic Events employs a small team of project managers to create high quality corporate events for the public and private sector, but it needed smarter client management to allow the business to operate more efficiently.

The company employed Derfogail through the University of York’s Student Internship Bureau’s Graduate Internship programme, a 12 week full-time scheme offering a generous subsidy on the interns’ wages.

I would encourage other companies to get involved

Derfogail assessed Mosaic’s needs and prepared a shortlist of two suppliers of appropriate client management solutions. She organised in-house presentations, and later negotiated a discount with the successful supplier.

The software has now been installed, and Derfogail will spend the rest of her placement with Mosaic Events populating the database and streamlining template documents, as well as being involved in day to day business activities.

Sarah Byrne, Director of Mosaic Events, said:  “Derfogail’s internship has been invaluable. The new system will increase efficiency in the business by 20-30 per cent and has enabled the company to develop and will help it to grow in the future.

"The internship scheme has given us the resource to tackle a project that we knew needed completing, but which we never had the time to do. Internships represent excellent value for money and allow companies to give graduates an opportunity to gain experience. I would encourage other companies to get involved.”

Derfogail Delcassian said: “My internship has allowed me to experience a career I had considered but which I had no previous experience of. I was given full responsibility to run the project by myself. I believe I rose to the challenge, and it has given me the confidence to embark on the next stage in my career. “

Helen Staley, of the University’s Student Internship Bureau, added:  “Graduate internships are a cost-effective and flexible way for employers to engage a high quality graduate to work on a specific project for a defined period of time. Internships are also an excellent way for graduates to gain valuable work experience, bolster their CVs and improve their employability skills.”
