The University was praised for recognising the changing nature of postdoctoral research with extra support and in particular for offering researchers training in areas such as marketing, finance and management.
Professor Alastair Fitter, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research, said: "The University of York is recognised as a centre for world class scientific research and that is the product of a number of ingredients, including a supportive working environment for its staff.
"This survey offers welcome recognition that the University of York is one of the best globally in supporting the work of its postdoctoral researchers."
The University was rated particularly highly by respondents to the survey in areas including quality of communication, networking opportunities, training and mentoring and family and personal life.
Postdoctoral researchers at the University have access to a range of tailored training courses in areas such employability skills, mentoring and leadership. Events are also organised with the Universities of Sheffield and Leeds, partners in the White Rose University Consortium, that include opportunities for networking with potential employers and training for careers in academia.
The results of The Scientist survey further underline the University of York’s strong international reputation for research. In December, the University was ranked in the top ten UK institutions for research in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise with 12 departments rated among the top 10 in their field.
