In the 2009 National Student Survey (NSS), 90 per cent of final-year students at York said the knowledge and enthusiasm of the University’s academics made their courses interesting and intellectually stimulating.
The NSS provides us with an invaluable first-hand evidence of the quality of the student learning experience

More than half York’s departments are rated in the top ten in their subject areas for teaching.
The 2,346 final-year students were among thousands across the country who were asked to comment on their courses in the study which is an important barometer of the undergraduate student experience in higher education institutions across the UK.
The departments at York which ranked in the top ten in their subject areas for teaching are: Archaeology, Biology and Chemistry (Biochemistry), Computer Science, Electronics, Economics, Medicine (Hull York Medical School), Music, Philosophy, Physics, Psychology, Social Policy and Sociology.
In the 2009 NSS, students also ranked York in the top ten for the organisation and management of their courses and the academic support that they receive.
The NSS results follow the University’s strong performance in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) which rated York eighth out of 159 higher education institutions for research excellence.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Trevor Sheldon said: “The NSS provides us with an invaluable first-hand evidence of the quality of the student learning experience. Our results show a pleasing upward trend, and reflect well on the skill and dedication of our staff.
“Together with the RAE result, the NSS demonstrates the continuing excellence of both teaching and research at York.”
